Sri Lanka is one of those hidden gems of the world, with a bustling capital and myriad of thriving tourism cities around the island. With the end of 2016 showcasing the highest number of tourists arriving into the country after four decades, there is much to experience when visiting the island pearl of the Indian Ocean. One such attraction are the avenues of shipping in Sri Lanka.
The commercial capital opens up a myriad of destinations for shopping in Sri Lanka, and this includes everything from the mega malls and department stores that carry a variety of international designer wear to boutique shops that caters to artisanal creations and not to mention runway looks of the many designers in the Colombo Fashion Week showcase. Sri Lanka being a key player of the global apparel market, there are many individuals in the country that are finessed and trained in the designer and ready-to-wear industries of the fashion world. Having said so, many international labels are present in the country today and also local names that are very popular. Let’s look at some of the favoured choices for shopping in Sri Lanka.
Once an ancestral mansion, the ODEL Sri Lanka department store is one of the most popular shopping destinations in Colombo, and now with branches across the country, you are able to indulge in the fruits of the ODEL umbrella without needing to visit the capital. The largest ODEL store, location in Colombo, offers everything from clothing items (that range from budget to designer, from basic t-shirts to designer watches), home ware, books, luxury spa items and more. It makes for an ideal shopping destination due to the value-added services the premises provide from a foot massage parlour, eateries, a bar and more!
Similar to ODEL, there are a number of establishments that have popped up in the last decade or so. Hosting shopping space for designer and local labels, the likes of Arcade Independence Square, Colombo Racecourse, Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct, Majestic City, Liberty Plaza, and the House of Fashions are great shopping destinations that have been added to our tours of Sri Lanka usually on the latter stages of the travel itinerary.
