Airport – Sigiriya
Sigiriya / Dambulla / Kandy
Once the royal citadel of King Kasyapa for over 20 years, it’s a true wonder of manmade architecture. One of Sri Lanka’s greatest examples of ancient skill and workmanship, the masterpiece that was the Palace in the Sky was built atop this rock. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has much to see including the famous Sigiriya Damsels!
To get to the Golden Cave Temple of Dambulla, you will need to hike 100m to 150m from the ground level, however it is worth every step. The gilded cave temples that have been decorated with beautiful murals and statues are an amazing sight! Tour the five caves of the Dambulla Rock Cave temple and be amazed by the history, culture and beauty within.
At the Woodcarving Factory, one could witness craftsmen display a variety of woodcarving skills.
A visit to the Spice Garden is a great way to explore the different aromatic spices grown on the island as well as find out how they are used in the local cuisine and for medicinal purpose. The local cuisine has been heavily influenced by the fact that Sri Lanka was a trading port of the Silk Road, with various traders bringing their native spices and their local fare and introducing it to the island. Sri Lanka is also very involved in Ayurveda medicine and uses various plants and spices to treat various conditions.
The Cultural Show will feature the various dance forms of the Low-Country and Up-Country land inspired by the local culture and folklore. Be enamoured by the fire dancers, demon dancers, and of course the traditional Kandyan dancers with the finale being a display of fire walking.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa houses the most important Relic to the Buddhists in Sri Lanka. Housed in what used to be the royal palace of Kandy, (“Maligawa” translates directly to Palace), it is a beautiful structure with great history and culture. The “poojas” of veneration are held at dawn, mid-morning and dusk every day, where visitors clad modestly in white come to pay homage. The tooth itself is never seen, but kept locked up in a diminishing series of caskets, which are closely guarded.
